Bringing Vintage to Life

May 16, 2010

When new retro looks and lifestyle publication Vintage Life were looking for contributors, I thought I’d volunteer my services. Though I never thought for one minute that they’d invite me to become a regular writer and photographer.

Following an online launch issue, the first physical magazine has just been published which, in their words, is “aimed at revisiting and rekindling the wonderful years gone by – bringing those memories alive again!” and covers topics “from style and fashion, hair and make-up to house and home, toys and collectibles to music and film, – everything great about the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s through to the 70s!”

And I think they’re off to a great start – with a mix of articles covering some interesting stuff. I particularly liked the practical tips on how to date vintage clothing and the coverage of the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. At 67 glossy pages it’s definitely proof of the growing army of people looking back to the past for inspiration – whether you’re just partial to the odd 60s dress or are a hardcore 1940s revivalist.

My first article for Vintage Life Magazine bigging up our Jeni

For my inaugural editorial outing I opted for a piece on Jeni Aldridge and our work together at Darkteaser’s Garter Lounge. Backstage at a burlesque show is not a world people often see and it has the right mix of glamour and great imagery to establish what Raquel Rouge is about. (Though they did hold back on publishing some of the more the risqué images!)

I’ve already got some cool ideas of what I’ll be writing about next, so watch this space, or better still click on the ‘subscribe’ link on the right of this and the space will come to you.

The magazine is available as a print subscription for £19.75 a year or digital subscription for a one-off payment of £9.99 – either way, it is well worth a read.

What an awesome opportunity! There’s a vintage clothing shop where I live that sells clothes of this nature. The owner is really cool and lets you rent stuff for a fraction of the price. Going to be doing some fashion photography shoots real soon using her outfits. Look forward to seeing more pics. Regards R cape town south africa
